Department
of Justice (DOJ) junked 2015 General Revision of Base Market Values proposed by
the province of Aklan.
In
a nine-page decision on petitions filed by two Aklan officials, Justice
Secretary Leila de Lima declared that the tax raise did not comply with
procedural requirements under the Local Government Code.
Thus,
the real property tax increase in Aklan is “null and void for being contrary to
law,” declared the Department of Justice.
On
the other hand, it can be recalled that Sangguniang Panlalawigan member Rodson
Mayor and New Washington mayor Edgar Peralta filed petitions asking the Justice
department to declare the tax hike illegal.
De
Lima also noted that her department did not receive any comment from the
provincial government regarding the petitions.
Meanwhile,
Provincial Assessor’s Office head Kokoy Soguilon, who provided this reporter a
copy of the Department of Justice’s decision, said the provincial
government will appeal the decision.
